A VIDEO JOURNEY

There’s no doubt each of our brand partners has a strong and proud identity. Knowing it would be hard to convey the importance of what we are trying to do solely through words on a page, we’ve partnered with local filmmakers to help tell each of their unique stories aloud.

Oakland is Real

When HFF set out to curate the best of Oakland for the airport, we put boots on the ground. We crossed the Bay Bridge, soaked up the warmer weather, and got to talking to strangers from Temescal to Lake Merritt to West Oakland. What makes Oakland, Oakland? How does the restaurant and food community play a role in shaping Oakland and the East Bay?

The answers were powerful.

farmerbrown

farmerbrown was built from the ground up by owners Jay Foster and Deanna Sison. A true labor of love, the restaurant was created from their passions: hers, community, and his, food. Watch to see how farmerbrown has become a place where good things gather: locally sourced seasonal ingredients, West Coast freshness and time-honored southern recipes from the Creoles to the Carolinas, and artful and seasonally celebrated cocktails that blend well with fresh beats.

Tacolicious

Tacolicious may have launched in 2009 as a stand at the San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, but founder Joe Hargrave's affair with Mexico started when he was a kid. Back in the 70s, his parents would hitch a catamaran to their VW van and drive the family down to Baja to camp on the beach for months at a time. When Joe returned to Mexico as an adult, it was trip that he and wife Sara Deseran took, eating their way through Mexico City that provided the "aha" moment that ultimately lead to Tacolicious. Watch their story.

Balboa Cafe

Founded over a century ago, Balboa Cafe is truly a San Francisco institution. Balboa’s cult following keeps the bar and dining room full, from morning to late night. Walk in at lunch, and you will find financiers brokering deals over lunch in the rear dining room. Walk in at brunch, and you will find at least three generations of Balboa regulars, strollers in tow. Walk in at happy hour or past midnight on Friday, and you will find a lively bar scene of young San Franciscans and their friends celebrating a night on the town.
